Veganism really hit the mainstream in a big way in 2011. It’s still very much a diet of the minority — various surveys indicate that only 1% of American adults are vegan — but I think that several things happened last year to make vegan diets seem less extreme and more doable for the average person.
Apparently I’m not alone in thinking that, as this U.S. News article from last week indicates.

So, we all know — and like, even! — some omnivores. And generally the goal of buying someone a gift is to get them something you think they’ll enjoy. At the same time, I don’t want to buy someone, I don’t know, a long leather trench coat for Christmas because that would make me feel kind of gross. (They probably wouldn’t appreciate the above shirt, either.)

Last night I attended the November edition of Veggie Drinks in Toronto (an event I organise monthly). At one point, the discussion turned to protein intake — many people, omnivores included, think they don’t eat enough protein when in reality the average North American is eating more than the recommended intake. Part of the reason for this, I think, is that we’ve become completely out of touch with what a serving of meat really is — the fact that we tend to eat animals by the part isn’t helping.

I just got back from vacation and now, all of a sudden, it’s the holiday season. I am never ready for it. I’m planning to start (and maybe finish?) my Christmas shopping at the One Of A Kind show in Toronto this weekend, but in the meantime I’ll be checking out holiday guides for ideas — and posting about them here. First up is the Vegan Cuts Holiday Shopping Guide.

New places to find me!

I’m in the process of moving over to a real grown-up web address for The Vegina Monologues — I’ll be moving over posts from here, and I’ll be posting both places for a while.

I’m also on Twitter as @vegmonologues! You can follow my personal account as well, @terri_to — the one for this blog will be very vegan-specific.

Did you know that Leslie Hall is vegan? I did not! You can hear her song new song about eating tasty plants (don’t forget the legumes) at Kittee Kake’s site.
